A current phishing attempt uses an email which appears to be sent by American Savings Bank. The email informs the online banking customer that other parties may have attempted to gain access to or control of the individual’s account information and, as a result the number of ‘failed login’ attempts has been exceeded. The email further asks the individual to call a telephone number provided in the email to reactivate his/her debit card.
IF YOU RECEIVE THIS EMAIL, DO NOT RESPOND TO IT. DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY. AMERICAN SAVINGS BANK AND ITS AUTHORIZED VENDORS DO NOT SOLICIT CONFIDENTIAL OR PERSONAL INFORMATION BY PHONE OR EMAIL.
If you contacted the number listed in the mail and provided personal and account information, please contact our Customer Service Center at 627-6900 or toll-free from the Neighbor Islands at 800-272-2566.
What is Phishing? Phishing is a scam where Internet fraudsters send spam or pop-up messages to obtain personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims. To avoid getting hooked American Savings Bank provides the following reminders for customers to protect themselves:
- Don't reply to email or pop-up messages that ask for personal or financial information, and don't click on links in the message. Don't cut and paste a link from the message into your Web browser — phishers can make links look like they go to one place, but that actually send you to a different site.
- Some scammers send an email that appears to be from a legitimate business and asks you to call a phone number to update your account or access a "refund."
- Use anti-virus and anti-spyware software, as well as a firewall, and update them all regularly.

- Review credit card and bank account statements as soon as you receive them to check for unauthorized charges.
- Be cautious about opening any attachment or downloading any files from emails you receive, regardless of who sent them.
