Fraudulent FDIC E-mails

The situation
Deceptive e-mail messages are being sent to consumers, seemingly
by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

The e-mail informs the recipient that the Department of Homeland
Security has advised that the deposit insurance on the recipient’s
bank accounts has been suspended, due to suspected violations
of the USA Patriot Act. It also states that unless the consumer
verifies their personal and bank account information, their deposit
insurance will be suspended by the FDIC.

However, the e-mails are not being sent by the FDIC and it is a
fraudulent effort to gather personal information from consumers.

What you should do
Recipients of the e-mail (consumers and financial institutions)
should not access the link provided within the body of the
e-mail and should not, under any circumstances, provide any
personal information through this media.

Report any similar attempts to gain access to personal information
to the FDIC by e-mailing information to alert@fdic.gov.
