Computer users: Beware spyware

Beware of spywareWorms, viruses, spam - you may have taken steps to protect your personal computer and e-mail from these problems. The latest plague for Internet users is spyware, the name for applications that "spy" on your online actions.

Spyware is software that gathers user information through your Internet connection and forwards it to someone else. It's usually used for advertising purposes, so the recipient can send you ads or pop-ups. Most spyware is legitimate, and you usually - unknowingly - allow it to be installed on your computer when you download freeware or shareware or browse certain websites.

Although spyware usually just results in a lot of unwanted advertising, there can be dangers. Some versions, which are not legitimate and install themselves without your knowledge, can gather information about passwords and credit cards by monitoring your keystrokes and forward that information to a third party, potentially leading to financial fraud or identity theft.

Are you affected?
If you're experiencing any of the following, you may have spyware installed on your computer:

  • You're getting a lot of pop-up advertisements.
  • Your home page or other settings have changed without your knowledge.
  • Your browser suddenly has a new toolbar and you can't get rid of it.
  • Your computer seems slower than usual, or you experience multiple crashes. That's because spyware uses computer memory and bandwidth as it sends information.

How to deal with spyware
You can help protect yourself against spyware by using an Internet firewall, downloading the latest security updates and using up-to-date antivirus software. There are also applications available to detect, remove and/or block spyware, but be sure you are using a reputable product or you could end up with a bigger spyware problem.
