Hawaii Assistive Technology (HAT)
Providing Low-interest Assistive Technology Loans

Offered through American Savings Bank, in cooperation with the Assistive Technology Resource Centers of Hawaii (ATRC), the HAT Loan Program provides Hawaii residents with low-cost financing at favorable interest rates to acquire assistive technological devices and services that can enhance independence in the home, workplace and community. More.

HAT borrowers may also be eligible for personal, auto, or secured loans at a reduced rate or for an extended term.

Q: Who is eligible?

A: Any Hawaii resident, disabled or non-disabled, may apply for a HAT Loan, as long as the device or service purchased with the funds benefits one or more persons with a disability by promoting their independence and productivity in the community.

Q: What are Assistive Technological (AT) devices?

A: AT devices are also known as Life Tools and can be anything from eyeglasses, canes, and hearing aids, to voice recognition computers, closed captioning decoders, wheelchair ramps, and much more.

Q: What are some of the devices and services that can be acquired with a HAT loan?

A:

  • A motorized wheelchair and a wheelchair lift
  • A roll-in shower or level handle on the door
  • A computer that reads aloud to persons with a visual impairment
  • A TDD/TTY or other communication device for the hearing impaired or non-verbal individual
  • Replacement or repair of existing AT devices
  • Any other product or adaptive aid that removes a barrier or creates accessible opportunities in the community

Q: What are the terms of HAT loans?

A: You can borrow as little as $500 up to $30,000. Interest rates for a HAT loan are lower than other loans of the same type.
