American Savings Bank Unveils ASB Campus, Setting a New Standard in Innovative Workplace Design

ASB April 09, 2019 | 5 min read N/A

The 11-story, 373,000-square-foot Campus features a teammate amenities floor, high-tech work areas and a full-service bank branch

HONOLULU, April 9, 2019 – American Savings Bank (ASB) has unveiled its brand new ASB Campus – the first new office building in downtown Honolulu in nearly 25 years. The 11-story, 373,000-square-foot Campus is located at 300 N. Beretania Street, directly across from ‘A‘ala Park. In true ASB style, the bank celebrated the official grand opening of the building with an epic, festive party for all of its 1,100 teammates on Sunday, April 7, 2019.

The Campus, which features a teammate-focused workspace design, brings together over 650 teammates from five separate locations on O‘ahu and serves as a home base for the bank’s 1,100+ teammates across the state.

“We couldn’t be more excited and proud to open the doors of our ASB Campus to our teammates and the community,” said Rich Wacker, president and CEO of ASB. “Now that our entire team is together under one roof, we look forward to working more efficiently, collaboratively and innovatively than ever before, furthering our vision of being a great bank making people’s dreams possible.”

The grand opening celebration included the presentation of a custom chant written for ASB by Kumu Hula Nalani Kanaka‘ole, a traditional Hawaiian blessing and maile lei untying guided by Kahu Kordell Kekoa and Chinese lion dance. Teammates also enjoyed live entertainment and food and drink from nearby Chinatown merchants and ASB business customers.

“Much like the central staircase that connects American Savings Bank teammates to one another in this magnificent new building, the decision to place a $100 million headquarters across the street from ‘A‘ala Park shows ASB is a company committed to connecting with the community it serves, said Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell. “I want to thank the entire ASB ‘ohana for making this meaningful investment that will continue to pay dividends for decades to come.”

A Modern Space for a Modern Workforce

Designed to promote a culture of openness and efficiency, the new ASB Campus puts workplace collaboration at the forefront. By breaking down former silos and physical barriers between teams and implementing a design more conducive to partnership, the new Campus serves as one of the most modern and dynamic worksites in the state and will enable the ASB team to make banking easier for customers.

The building team included national architect Leo A. Daly; local architect hiarchy, llp; and general contractor Nordic PCL. The Campus’ pre-cast design allows for open-floor layouts on each office floor, with meeting rooms and an elevator lobby at the core of the building. Sustainable features include EV charging stations, photovoltaic panels, reclaimed wood furniture, water dispensers, energy-efficient appliances and a “green benefit” that encourages teammates to carpool, walk, bike or take public transportation to work. It is also the first office building in the state to use View Dynamic Glass, a digitally connected glass that intelligently tints to control glare and heat to create a more comfortable environment.

Developed with the ASB teammate in mind, the Campus features a wide variety of amenities, including a training center, 4,500-square-foot teammate lunchroom, complimentary self-serve Starbucks coffee hui on each office floor, relaxation rooms, arcade, employee fitness center, and 10,000 square feet of outdoor lanai space. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the building, allowing teammates to work from their desks, at collaborative workspaces and even on one of the two outdoor lanai.

A Partnership in Artful Banking

In commemoration of the Campus, ASB partnered with acclaimed Native Hawaiian designers Manaola Yap and Sig Zane to produce custom art pieces that tell the story of ASB and honor the history and culture of the land.

The ASB/Manaola partnership represents the first corporate undertaking for MANAOLA Group, an ASB customer. Yap incorporated his signature use of ‘ohe kāpala (bamboo stamp), an ancestral Hawaiian stamping method that draws inspiration from repetitious patterns found in nature, to create a custom pattern for the bank.  The pattern was digitized into bold prints that are incorporated into art throughout the Campus, including wall wraps on the 1st and 10th floors, as well as in ASB’s refreshed branding – from marketing collateral to the new ATM design.

Sig Zane Designs worked closely with ASB teammates to develop a set of art elements that combine several Native Hawaiian art techniques such as ʻohe kāpala, kinolau (the drawing of natural elements) and watermark. Through a collaboration with ASB teammates, Sig Zane’s design team incorporated the overarching themes of growth, abundance and unity into the custom artwork displayed throughout the building.

ASB worked with several additional local artists and designers to bring the building to life, including Noel Magtanong of Island Reclaimed Wood, Solomon Enos, BLKCORAL, Welcome Stranger and Lauren Trangmar. In addition, the first floor is home to The Lo‘i Gallery - a rotating gallery of local artists. Current artists on display include Ka‘ili Chun, John De Mello, Abigail Romanchak and Noe Tanigawa.

An Investment in the Community

For years, ASB has committed to being a good neighbor in the community through its bi-annual Seeds of Service Community Cleanups. Since 2015, ASB teammates have contributed more than 8,000 volunteer hours to beautify the area around its Campus, including ʻAʻala Park, College Walk, and Sun Yat-sen Mall. ASB’s ninth cleanup event is scheduled for mid-May, and will incorporate the support of area legislators and fellow community organizations.

In addition, to commemorate its grand opening, ASB announced an annual commitment of $15,000 to the Lawakua Charitable Fund, which will provide a full-year tuition scholarship to a student from Mayor Wright Housing to attend private school on O‘ahu. Over its 30-year history, Lawakua has guided hundreds of disadvantaged youth to a more hopeful future. The program uses martial arts to teach youth confidence, coordination, structure, and discipline, with a focus on children who live in O‘ahu public housing.

Opening Events

The community is invited to celebrate the new ASB Campus at two upcoming events, free and open to the public:

  • ASB Campus Branch Grand Opening, Thursday April 18 at 8:45 a.m.: ASB will host a grand opening celebration of its Campus Branch, located on the ground level of the building. Festivities will include a traditional Hawaiian blessing, prize giveaways and light refreshments.
  • ASB Campus Community Open House, Sunday, May 5 from 1-4 p.m.: The public is invited to free building tours, which will spotlight artwork throughout the building, panoramic views and other amenities. Attendees will also have an opportunity to visit The Lo‘i Gallery, featuring artwork by Ka‘ili Chun, John De Mello, Abigail Romanchak and Noe Tanigawa.

A Guide to Long-Term Planning for You and Your Family

ASB January 25, 2019 | 5 min read N/A

Thinking about what happens after we pass away isn’t the most comfortable topic, but it is a necessary one. Having a financial plan in place to protect your family after you’re gone can help alleviate significant stress and support their long-term stability. One way you can plan ahead is by setting up a life insurance policy.

Our team at American Savings Bank knows that taking care of your loved ones is a top priority. We’ve put together a guide to term life insurance – read on to learn all about how this tool can protect your loved ones financially in the future.

WHAT IS TERM LIFE INSURANCE?
Term life insurance is a type of life insurance that provides a monetary payment (also known as a death benefit) to your beneficiary if you pass away during the time that your policy is active. Sometimes called “pure life insurance,” term insurance allows you to choose a set time period, during which your benefits are in place. This set time period is the term of the policy. Once the term expires, you can usually renew the policy and convert it to a different type of life insurance or terminate the policy and lose its benefits. You’ll also be able to choose a specified death benefit amount for your policy.

Compared with other types of life insurance, term life insurance usually has a lower premium. The affordability of term life insurance comes from the simplicity of the policy. You won’t get a savings component with term insurance. However, there are lots of times where a term policy can be an affordable option for financially protecting your loved ones in the event that you pass away unexpectedly.

DO I NEED TERM LIFE INSURANCE?
If you’re wondering if you need term life insurance, you’ll want to consider several factors. The most important is whether or not you have a spouse, children, or other dependents who rely on your income. As the provider to your dependents, your death would not only be an emotional burden but potentially a financial one as well. As a parent, you want to ensure that your kids have the means to live a financially secure life.

Those without children or other dependents are less likely to need term life insurance. However, there are some instances in which you could benefit from term insurance, even if you don’t have someone directly depending on your income. Homeowners, or those looking to purchase their first home, might benefit from a term policy. You can choose a policy with a term that mirrors your mortgage. For example, with a 30-year mortgage, you might purchase a term life policy for 30 years. This protects your relatives from potentially being on the hook for your mortgage if you were to pass away.

WHY LIFE INSURANCE IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUR FAMILY
While it’s always a good idea to have a safety net in the form of a savings account, a term life insurance policy can be incredibly useful. If you have a spouse, or kids, for example, the death benefit of a term insurance policy can provide income replacement. Funeral expenses, potential medical costs, and your existing debts are passed onto your family when you pass away. Without life insurance, your family is burdened with these debts while also being affected by the loss of your income. Your death benefit will provide a sum of money that can help cover at least some of these costs. It can also be used to retain your family’s standard of living and maintain future investments, such as college funds for your children.

Stay-at-home parents can also consider a term life insurance policy. If you are the daily caretaker for your children while your spouse is at work, your passing would certainly affect your family’s income. Suddenly, there would be childcare expenses for your family to consider. Generally, the amount of money you make is less important than the negative effects on your family due to the loss of your role as a caretaker.

IS MY EMPLOYER-SPONSORED LIFE INSURANCE ENOUGH?
Many people enjoy some form of term life insurance as a benefit offered by their employers. Unfortunately, these policies may not be enough to cover funeral costs and other expenses. Additionally, you’ll want to have extra protection on your own because such policies are typically tied to your employment. You may be at risk of losing the benefit in case something happens and you can no longer work or you lose your job for other reasons.

Is your employer-sponsored life insurance enough to cover expenses if you pass away? You can use a calculator to determine how much insurance might be right for you. Once you know how much insurance coverage you need, look at the amount provided by your employer.

Now that you know more about life insurance, you may be wondering when you should get it. Generally, purchasing life insurance is more affordable the earlier you are in life. Speak with a knowledgeable member of our insurance and investments team at ASB to learn what options are available to you. We’ll help you determine how much insurance you may need and what length of term is right for you and your family.

New Year's Resolutions: Creating a Budget

ASB December 17, 2019 | 5 min read N/A

One of the best ways you can start the New Year off right is by creating a budget. Whether you’re a college student or senior in high school, creating a budget allows you to plan for expenses and savings in the coming year. With a solid budget in place, you’ll be able to plan for a big purchase or save up for an upcoming milestone.

At American Savings Bank, we want you to go into the New Year feeling confident in your finances. Follow the below steps to prepare your 2020 budget. We’ll help you look at areas where you may be able to cut down expenses as well as guide you to prepare a fund for unexpected life changes.

DETERMINE YOUR INCOME
The first step in creating a budget is to determine your monthly income. This will include your wages after tax, or the actual amount being deposited into your account at each pay period. If you have a significant other, include his or her income as well. Start by looking at your job wages and include any extra income you know you will have as well. This could include an annual bonus from work or a cash birthday gift from a loved one. Once you know your monthly income, you’ll know how much money you have to allot towards your expenses.

EVALUATE YOUR UPCOMING EXPENSES
Sit down and total up all of your known expenses for the coming year. This could include your monthly rent or mortgage payments, car payments, cost of various insurances, and any loan payments you may have. Adding these known expenses gives you a great starting point for how much you will need to cover expenses each month.

But what about unknown expenses, such as your credit card bill? Gather every bank statement, credit card statement, and receipts for cash payments you have available from the previous year. You can use this information to determine just how much you spent on non-recurring expenses over the course of the previous year. Break down the large yearly number into an average monthly expense. You can then add this average non-recurring expense to your known expenses to create a fairly accurate monthly expense for the coming year.

CREATING A BUDGET BASED ON KNOWN CHANGES
Now that you’ve estimated your average expenses each month, consider any upcoming life changes that might affect your budget in the new year. For example, if you and your significant other are planning to start a family, you will need to factor the costs of doctors, medication, and baby supplies into your budget. Similarly, if you’re thinking of buying a house this year, include estimated down payment and mortgage costs.

While there are many changes that can negatively affect your budget, there are also changes that can make a positive impact on your income. Are you planning to take a new, higher-paying job this year? Perhaps you’re getting ready to accept a promotion or raise from your current employer. These changes will increase your total monthly income and give you more flexibility in budgeting.

FACTORING IN UNEXPECTED EXPENSES
Not all expenses are as easy to predict. Sometimes life throws us a curveball leaving us with unexpected expenses that can really hurt a budget. For example, if you get into a car accident and your vehicle is totaled, you will suddenly need to purchase a new car. Factoring unforeseen expenses into your budget can protect you financially should disaster strike.

The easiest way to protect yourself against unexpected major expenses is to build an emergency fund. You can route part of your income into a savings account. A savings account also allows you to earn interest on your emergency fund, so it can grow over time. Some banks, like ASB, offer a range of savings options for different types of savers. You can deposit a large sum of money and earn a higher interest rate right away or simply open a basic account.

CAN YOU CUT SPENDING?
Now that you have a basic budget figured out, you can refine it even further for the New Year. Look at the expenses you’ve included for the budget. Are there any recurring expenses that can be cut down? What about non-recurring expenses, such as dining out? You may be able to scale back your monthly expenses with a few small changes. If you have a lot of monthly payments for various loans, you might consider consolidating those debts into one personal loan.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU
Creating a budget is one of the best resolutions you can have to set yourself up for financial success in 2020. Need some help? Stop by an ASB branch near you to speak with our friendly, knowledgeable team.

Renting Vs. Buying a Home This New Year

ASB January 11, 2019 | 5 min read N/A

Are you entering the New Year with dreams of buying your very first home? If so, you might be wondering if now is the right time to buy. Real estate can be a good investment, hidden and it is important to know some of the costs of home ownership. Because of these costs, deciding between renting and buying a house, isn’t always a simple decision.

At American Savings Bank, we know that purchasing your first home is a huge life decision. We’re here to help! This guide will discuss some of the real costs and advantages to both renting and buying a home.

RENTING VS. BUYING
The biggest difference between renting and buying a house is ownership. If you are leasing a house, apartment, or condo, you are not the owner. Instead, you are paying rent to a landlord in exchange for the right to live at the property.

When you own a home, you no longer pay rent to a landlord. However, you probably will have a mortgage loan and will be making a monthly payment to your lender, as well as payments for property tax, homeowner’s insurance, and costs to maintain the home.

ADVANTAGES OF RENTING
Cost can be an important factor in choosing to rent a home instead of buying. The relatively lower cost of renting can allow you to spend less money up front. For example, a security deposit in Hawaii is a month's rent.

DISADVANTAGES OF RENTING
In the long run, renting a house can cost a lot more than buying a home, especially since you are not building any equity in a home that you don’t own. Additionally as a renter, at the end of one’s lease you have little control over what happens with the property. This could include raised rent, changes to the lease term, or the landlord may make changes to the property or sell it. This could leave you with little time to adjust or find a new place to live. Renting is also difficult if you have certain kinds of pets.  Finding pet-friendly rentals could involve additional time.

ADVANTAGES OF BUYING
Buying a home has its own set of unique advantages over renting. The most significant advantage is that as a homeowner, you do not have to answer to a landlord. Homeownership often comes with more control over the property. Anything from light fixtures to appliances that don’t quite meet your tastes can be changed as you wish. You’ll also enjoy more stability in your living situation. For a family with children, this can mean enjoying the benefits of living within a top-rated school district without having to fear eviction from a landlord.

Another advantage to home ownership is the ability to build home equity. This equity can be used as a down payment for a future home purchase or to secure a Home Equity Line of Credit for various life events, including home renovations.

DISADVANTAGES OF BUYING
Buying a home is a major financial decision. In addition to the purchase price, you’ll have to factor in the cost of property taxes and interest on your mortgage. You’ll also likely need to pay closing costs associated with buying the home. Over time, your home will need repairs and maintenance to keep it in good shape. As a homeowner, you’ll be paying these costs yourself.

FINANCING OPTIONS FOR BUYING A HOUSE
While buying a place to call your own is an expensive undertaking, not much compares to being the owner of your very own home. Luckily, ASB offers a wide range of home loan options to help you get the most cost-effective mortgage for your situation. For example, there are several government-backed programs for first time home buyers. Many of these programs offer lower down payment requirements. Lower up-front costs can help many first-time home buyers purchase their first home.

LEASING VS. BUYING: WHAT SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Wondering if leasing or buying a home is the right option for you? Looking over the pros and cons of each option alone may not be enough to determine if it’s time for you to rent or buy. Speak with one of our mortgage experts at ASB to learn more about your available options. Our friendly team is made up loan officers with local real estate expertise to help you determine if buying a home is right for you.

Travel Tips for your Next Trip

ASB January 31, 2019 | 5 min read N/A

Spring Break is just around the corner! Planning a trip to the mainland or out of the country in the coming months? Whether you’re visiting family or ready to explore a brand new place, traveling can be fun…but costly.

Not to worry – we’ve compiled a list of travel tips to help you on your next trip. We hope these tips will help you to plan ahead so you can worry less and enjoy more adventures with family and friends.

Redwoods

SAVE AHEAD FOR YOUR TRIP

It’s never too early to start saving for your next trip. Even before you decide where you want to travel next, saving up now can give you an instant head start on building up funds for your trip. Start by putting a little bit of each paycheck towards a “travel fund.” An easy way you can do this is to open a new savings account specifically for your travels. Using an account separate from your existing accounts will help to weaken the temptation of using the money for other things. Once you have an account set up, you can use it over and over to save for each trip you take.

hotel room

FIND GREAT DEALS ON LODGING

Staying with family or friends while you travel is a great way to save money on accommodations. For stays longer than a couple of nights, however, you may want to consider an alternative. Mom and Dad’s house with one bathroom is great when it’s just them, but add a few visitors and suddenly you’re using the kitchen sink to brush your teeth. A hotel might seem expensive, but you can usually get great deals just by shopping around. Check the hotel website for seasonal specials, or your credit card for rewards or affiliate discounts.

Have a big family or lots of friends traveling with you? It may be cheaper to book an entire house or condo. Travel apps and vacation rental sites offer listings from property owners looking to rent out their homes. Most properties on these sites offer multiple rooms and amenities such as a kitchen. The best part? Rentals often end up being less expensive than booking a traditional hotel room.

Airplane Takeoff

BOOKING FLIGHTS

If you’re flying during a peak season, get the best deal by booking your flights early. For example, you should try to book as early as the beginning of October for Thanksgiving flights, according to CNBC. For the winter holidays, booking around October 15 is your best bet. When you’re looking at flights, you can use a variety of price trackers to help you score the best deal as you track prices.

SAVE ON MEALS

According to 50states.com, as the most isolated population center in the world, flying from Hawaii to the mainland or a different country can make for long trips. As soon as you cross through airport security, you’ll see price increases on pretty much everything. Food is often marked up especially high in airports and on flights. Even if you skip the sit-down restaurants, your usual quick bite from a fast food chain is sure to be a couple dollars more expensive. The easiest way to save on meals when traveling to your destination is to pack snacks for the journey. Pack your favorite bento, some trail mix or other satisfying snacks to help keep you satisfied until you land at your destination.

mobile travel

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR ACCOUNTS

As you travel, be sure to keep an eye on your bank accounts. Choose a bank that offers online banking. This way, you can easily check your balances from anywhere in the world, as long as you have an internet connection. Check your accounts at the end of the day so you can make sure you’re on track with your travel budget. In addition to keeping your spending in check, online banking is a great way to watch out for fraudulent spending on your accounts. If you notice suspicious activity, talk with your bank right away and make sure you have some sort of identity theft protection in place.

If you’re traveling internationally, suggest exchanging money before you leave so you don’t end up paying a premium rate at the airport.

Follow these tips to make sure your time is spent enjoying the trip rather than worrying about how much it cost. From our entire team at American Savings Bank, we wish you safe travels!
